ABS Pilates is now offering several fun and unique courses to physical therapists, physical therapy assistants and athletic trainers. ABS Pilates is will come to your clinic and train your clinicians on how to use Pilates in rehabilitating your patients. Host a course at your clinic and receive a reduced fee for your clinicians.
ABS Pilates Course Offerings

Mat Pilates for Rehabilitating the Orthopedic Patient
Approximate times for course: 8a.m. – 6p.m. with 45 minute lunch and two 15-minute breaks.
Proposed CEUS – 8.5
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to
- Demonstrate a good understanding of the history and evolution of Pilates.
- Identify the Pilates Principles and how to use those principles in rehabilitating patients of different diagnoses.
- Identify and teach the Movement Principles of Pilates
- Identify and teach mat and standing-based Pilates exercises
- Incorporate mat-based and standing-based Pilates exercises in the plan of care for patients of different diagnoses.
- Understand how to bill appropriately for Pilates in a rehabilitative setting
- Identify the latest research regarding Pilates in a rehabilitative setting.

Mat Pilates and Pilates Using Props for Rehabilitating the Orthopedic Patient
Approximate times for course: Saturday, 8a.m. – 6p.m. -with 45 minute lunch and two 15-minute breaks. Sunday, 8a.m. – 1p.m. -with one 15-minute break
Proposed CEUS – 12.5
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to
- Demonstrate a good understanding of the history and evolution of Pilates.
- Identify the Pilates Principles and how to use those principles in rehabilitating patients of different diagnoses.
- Identify and teach the Movement Principles of Pilates
- Identify and teach mat and standing-based Pilates exercises
- Incorporate mat-based and standing-based Pilates exercises in the plan of care for patients of different diagnoses.
- Incorporate exercise balls, therabands and foam rollers to enhance or advance the Pilates exercises to meet the goals of patients with different diagnoses
- Understand how to bill appropriately for Pilates in a rehabilitative setting
- Identify the latest research regarding Pilates in a rehabilitative setting.
- How to start up a cash-based mat Pilates class in a physical therapy clinic.

Mat Pilates and Equipment Pilates for Rehabilitating the Orthopedic Patient
Approximate times for course: Saturday, 8a.m. – 6p.m. (with 45 minute lunch and two 15-minute breaks.)
Sunday, 8a.m. – 5p.m. (with 45-minute lunch and two 15-minute breaks)
Proposed CEUS – 16
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to
- Demonstrate a good understanding of the history and evolution of Pilates.
- Identify the Pilates Principles and how to use those principles in rehabilitating patients of different diagnoses.
- Identify and teach the Movement Principles of Pilates
- Identify and teach mat and standing-based Pilates exercises
- Incorporate mat-based and standing-based Pilates exercises in the plan of care for patients of different diagnoses.
- Demonstrate a good understanding of the safe set up of different pieces of Pilates equipment such as the Universal Reformer and/or the Pilates Tower.
- Incorporate Pilates equipment such as the Universal Reformer and the Pilates Tower in the plan of care for patients of different diagnoses.
- Identify how to adjust the Pilates equipment safely for the needs of each patient.
- Understand how to bill appropriately for Pilates in a rehabilitative setting
- Identify the latest research regarding Pilates in a rehabilitative setting.
- How to start up a cash-based mat Pilates class in a physical therapy clinic.

All courses include:
Approximately 25% Audio/visual presentation. All audio/visual equipment provided by ABS Pilates
Approximately 75% lab work
Bound manual for each participants
Approved CEUs for physical therapists, physical therapy assistants. We will also submit CEU approval for other professions upon request.

The course is lead by Amanda Smith, a licensed physical therapist, certified Pilates instructor, nationally certified group exercise instructor and certified McKenzie therapist with more that 25 years of experience.

8:00a.m. – 8:30a.m Registration/Continental Breakfast
8:30a.m. – 9:30a.m. History of Pilates, Pilates Principles, Anatomy and Movement Principles
9:30a.m. – 10:30a.m. Mat Pilates Lab – Mat Pilates class introducing the movement principles and mat-based exercises
10:30a.m. – 10:45a.m. Break
10:45a.m. – 12:00p.m. Mat Pilates Lab – Break down and teach the movement principles and mat-based exercises.
12:00p.m. – 12:45p.m. Lunch
12:45p.m. – 1:45p.m. Review mat-based exercises and identify how to incorporate these exercises in a patient’s plan of care.
1:45p.m. – 2:45p.m Standing and Props-based Pilates Lab – Break down and teach the standing Pilates exercises and how to incorporate props into the exercises.
2:45p.m. – 3:45p.m. Identify how to incorporate these exercises in a patient’s plan of care.
3:45p.m. – 4:00p.m. Break
4:00p.m. – 5:00p.m. Case Studies – Using mat and standing-based Pilates to rehabilitate patients diagnosed with lower back pain. Using mat and standing-based Pilates to rehabilitate patients with knee dysfunction (CMP, post-op knee arthroscopy or post-op TKR).
5:00p.m. – 5:30p.m Research and billing
5:30p.m. – 6:00p.m. Wrap-up and questions

All course are presented by Amanda B. Smith, P.T., Cert. MDT, ACE certified Group Exercise Instructor and Certified Pilates Instructor.
Amanda Smith is a licensed physical therapist in the state of Ohio. She graduated with a BS in physical therapy from the University of Oklahoma in 1994. She is a certified McKenzie therapist since 2009. She is certified in both mat and standing Pilates through the PhysicalMind Institute since 2000 and certified in both mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates through Balanced Body University since 2011.
She is a course presenter since 2011. She has presented in several conferences through her previous employer, OrthoNeuro (based out of Columbus, Ohio). She presented a weekend long course on how to use both mat-based and equipment-based Pilates to rehabilitate an Orthopedic patient in 2012. This course was approved by the Ohio board of physical therapy. She presented a day long course in Hurricane, West Virginia in 2015 on how to use mat Pilates, standing Pilates and props with Pilates to rehabilitate an orthopedic patient. She currently owns her own specialized Pilates business called ABS Pilates, LLC. She works with clients who have completed physical therapy and are still needing extra exercise assistant to rehabilitate from an injury or illness,clients who suffer with chronic physical conditions and healthy individuals who are looking for a unique way to exercise.
